Arlene B. Hafer, 95, of Rose View Court, formerly of Valley View Avenu e, went to be with her Lord on September 15, 2003. Born April 18, 1908 , in Old Lycoming Township, she was the daughter of Harry M. and Blanc he N. Smith Berry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver G . Hafer, whom she married June 27, 1934, in St. John's Evangelical Uni ted Brethren Church in Newberry. She attended Mansfield State College and earned a B.S. degree from Lock Haven State College and her M.S. de gree from Bucknell University.
Mrs. Hafer was a well-known educator in Lycoming County. She began he r teaching career in 1926 at Washington and Lose Elementary Schools. I n 1944 she took a position at Franklin Elementary School in Garden Vie w and in 1954 she became the first principal at the new Woodward Towns hip Elementary School, where she served until her retirement in 1973.
She was past president of the Pennsylvania State Education Association , Lycoming County Chapter, and served as president of the Pennsylvani a Association of School Retirees from 1987 to 1989. She was a member o f Delta Kappa Gamma professional Sorority and was president of the Omi cron Chapter from 1962 to 1964.
Mrs. Hafer has been active in civic organizations as well. She served as President of the Soroptimist Club, Clio Club and the Williamsport G arden Club. She was on the Board of the YWCA for many years and serve d as its President from 1958 to 1961. In 1992 she was elected presiden t of the local AARP. She was a patron of and Volunteer at the Lycomin g County Historical Society. She was a member of the Williamsport Chap ter #321 Order of the Eastern Star and the Baldwin Commandry.
Mrs. Hafer extended her role of educator teaching adult evening classe s in Christian Education and she was a member of the Lycoming Sabbath School Association. In addition she had been a Sunday School Teacher a nd an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was i nstrumental in organizing the Diamond Girls, a group of ladies all ove r the age of 75.
She is survived by her son, Robert A. (Carlene) Hafer of Williamsport and her daughter, Bonalyn L. (Philip) Shoemaker of Austin, Texas; gran ddaughters, Susan Ritchie, Jane Penman and Keli Roberts; grandsons, Ma rc Hafer and Todd Shoemaker; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother Willard S. Ber ry.
Burial services will be private at the convenience of the family. Ther e will be a public memorial service at Trinity United Methodist Church , 1971 Lycoming Creek Road, on Friday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m., with her p astor, the Rev. James R. Behrens, officiating. In lieu of flowers, con tributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of Lycoming County PASR .

Mary E. Hafer, 78, formerly of Harvest Moon Park, Linden, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001 in Sycamore Manor, following a lengthy illness.
Her husband of 57 years, Paul D., died August 31, 2001.
She had worked in the kitchen for the Williamsport Area School District. She was a member of Pine Run U.M. Church, the U.M. Women’s Society, the Pine Run Grange and the Salladasburg Senior Citizens.
Born October 1, 1923 in Linden, the daughter of Edward C. and Theresa Cornellius Best.
Surviving are a daughter, Judy M. Westbrook of Williamsport; two grandchildren, Marilyn Summers of MA and Paul Summers of Williamsport. She was pre-deceased by three brothers and a sister.
Funeral service, 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with Rev. Judith P. Hulslander officiating. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment in Woodward Township Cemetery. The family will provide the flowers and suggests contributions to Pine Run U.M. Church Children’s Dept., 25 Scenic View Drive, Linden, PA 17744 or Sycamore Manor, 1445 Sycamore Road, Montoursville, PA 17754.
