"Howard M. Hafer the popular proprietor of the "Seltzer House," and a l eading citizen and councilman of Womelsdorf, Berks Co., Pa., was bo r ni n Reading, Oct. 1, 1864, son of William H. and Elizabeth (Miller ) H afe r.
Henry Hafer the progenitor of this family in America, was a native of M ensen, Germany, whence he came to this country and settled in easte r nB erks county. He was a redemptioner and had been in bondage for s e v e ra l years Henry Hafer, great-grandfather of Howard M., was a fa rm er i nRu scombmanor township, Berks county. He died in Muhlenberg, an d w a s bur ied at Alsace Church. His wife was a Lorah, and they ha d t he f o ll ow ing children: Matthias; Jacob m. Anna Mee and had a s on,J ona t ha n; H en ry m. Harriet Snyder, and resided in Muhlenberg towns hip, an d had a so n Romanus; Katie m. John Moyer, and moved by teamt o In dia na; a n d Juli a m. George Mee, a miller of Tulpehocke n towns hip.
Matthias Hafer, son of Henry was born in Ruscombmanor township, Nov.2 8 , 1811, and died in Reading, Feb. 28, 1891, aged eighty years. Hewa s a tailor and farmer by occupation, and in about 1832 removed toMuh l e nberg township, where he carried on agricultural pursuits on asma ll s cale and did rough tailoring for the people of his vicinity.He m arri ed Hannah Himmelreich, born May 10, 1811, who died July 22,1 875 , ag e d sixty-four years, and to them there were born two child ren : (1) J ame s H., born in Alsace township in 1835, resides in Phi la d el p hia , w here he is a tailor and clerk in a clothing store;he m ar r ied H ettie F oos, and they had children Frank, Kate, Tyson,a nd A l ic e (dec e ased). ( 2) Wi lliam H. is the father of Howard M.
William H. Hafer was born Feb. 13, 1840, in Alsace (now Muhlenberg) t o wnship, and was brought up on the farm, on which he worked until tw e nt y-one years old. He came to Reading, in 1861, where he has since m a de his home, with the exception of four years when he carried onf ar mi ng in Exeter township. Mr. Hafer was the proprietor of the "Cit y H o tel " f rom 1889 to 1895, and from 1896 to 1898 conducted the " H o tel Penn, " bo th of Reading, and made himself well known as a hot e l k eep e r to t he tr aveling public. In politics he is a Democrat , a n d i s m uc h intere sted i n public affairs. He and his family a re m e mb ers o f Tri nity Luth eran Ch urch.
On Jan. 10, 1864, Mr. Hafer was married to Elizabeth Miller, born Dec . 4, 1840, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Goodman) Miller, the for m er a blacksmith of Reading, and granddaughter of Jacob and Mary Mil l e r who resided at the old Miller homestead at the northwest corner o f E ighth and Franklin streets. Mr. and Mrs. Hafer have been the pa r en ts o f four sons: Howard M.; Allen H., a carpet store proprietor a t Po ttsvi lle, Pa., m. Clara Herr, of Philadelphia, and had four c h il dren - -Elw ood (deceased), Claude, Ralph and Allen J.; William, J r ., died in chil dhood; and Edwin L., who resides at Reading. m. H e le n Ott , an d has on e son, Earle R.
Howard M. Hafer obtained his education in the Reading public schools, a fter leaving which he learned the coachmaker's trade, and for somet im e was engaged with George W. Biehl, whose employ he left to entert ha t of D. S. Esterly, wholesale grocer of Reading, where he remaine d si x years. He then assisted his father in conducting the "City Ho t e l " fo r about four years, and Jan. 1, 1893, he purchased the wel l - k no w n "Sel tzer Hotel" at Womelsdorf, Berks county, one of theo l des t h o st elries in the county which has had the patronage of th e t r av el i ng p ubl ic and the town trade for many years. This hote l,wh ic h is s till i n go od cond ition, was erected in 1798, and is sit u ate d on t h e Dauphi n tur npike, m idway between Reading and L eban o n . In earl y da ys it wa s the c hanging p lace for horses, an d Pre s i den t Mar t in Van B uren stop ped at t his hotel in 1838. M r. Hafe r ke eps a fin e house, an d has the reputatio n of keepi ng o ne ofth e bes t t a ble s o f any hotel in Berks c ounty.
In politics Mr. Hafer is an influential Democrat, and has been honore d by his townsmen by election to the council since 1899, by overwhelm i ng majorities. He has also been a delegate to numerous county conve n ti ons. He was the organizer of the Womelsdorf Volunteer Fire compa n y , o f which he has been chief since its organization in 1895. In 1890 Mr. Hafer married Miss Jennie Shulley, born on Nov. 7, 1863,d a ughter of Frederick and Lucretia (Riley) Shulley, farming people of F a irfield, Adams Co., Pa. Two children have been born to Mr. and Mr s . H afer, namely: Marie E., a student at school; and a son, who die d i n in fancy. "

Ida R. Lorah, 88, formerly of Exeter Township, died Feb. 18 at 9:30 a . m. in Green Hills Manor, Cumru Township, where she had been a resid e n t for more than two years. Her husband, Warren E. Lorah, died Ju l y 9 , 1998. Born in Reiffton, she was a daughter of the late Lloyda n d V es ta (Romig) Hafer. Lorah is survived by a daughter, ElaineJ. ( Lora h) Merkel, St. Lawrence. Other survivors include a brother, R a y Hafer , C restwood; and three sisters: Grace (Hafer) Robison,Caer n a rv on Tow nshi p, Lancaster County; Verna (Hafer) Shearer, Exe te r T o wnshi p; and Glady s (Hafer) Vollenweider, DuBois, Clearfiel dC o u nt y .
